How to sew a Driving Cap

Posted by: stayinhomensewin on: August 24, 2009

I spent countless hours searching the internet trying to find a pattern for the Driving Cap (Ivy cap, Flat cap, Golf cap,  Scally cap) depending on what you call it. My oldest son wanted one and we couldn’t find one, so I thought I would find a free pattern and print it off and sew it up. HAHA! There are tons for crochet/knitting but none for sewing. So at last I found one at the thrift shop for 99cents and figured I’d just dismantle it and trace out my pieces from there………

I did forget to take a picture of the original but here is my finished piece.

DSCF1858

So this cap was not that hard at all. You have 5 pieces including your brim board. There was a lining but since my fabric was kinda heavy (canvas) my son didn’t want a lining in it.

FEW THINGS FIRST:

I am not an expert Millinery so bare with me. If my name piece labeling is confusing, sorry again not an expert here.

**This is my personal pattern, not for anyone to copy and sell thanks!**

Suggestions-If you have never made a hat before with a brim, try it out on cheap/scraps first b/c attaching the band/brim is a real PITA!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            You can also do some top stitching on the brim before attaching. Or around the top seams. You can stencil the top/sides. Have fun.

IF you want the pattern pieces send me a comment

CUT:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        1 Top hat piece, 1 side pieces (labeled crown), 2 brim pieces, 1 band piece (or twill tape long enough), 1 brim board (if you are going to do a lining just do an extra top hat & crown piece)

ALL my sewing is at 1/4 inch *except brim piece*

DSCF1838

First pin your brim pieces wrong side out (my wrong side are the camo) and sew on the outside curve leaving top open to flip and tuck your brim board in.

 DSCF1839DSCF1840

Now with your brim board inside *sew across the top as close to edge as possible*. For the brim board I just used a piece of card board from a soda box, OPTIONAL: I think I sprayed it with some silicone water gaurd stuff I got at walmart in the camping section (I already had it for something else). And there is actual special brim board you can buy just not sure what it is called.

DSCF1842

Take your top piece and fold it so the center comes together and sew to the X that is marked on the pattern and it will look like this

DSCF1845

OK so I wish I had taken better pics of this part here. Pin the top piece and side/crown pieces together. On the pattern I marked it with red Xs that say Pinning on both pieces. Match up the center of the sides with center of the front. Sew from one end to the other all the way around.  (if you are doing a lining sew that together the same way)

DSCF1849DSCF1852

Flip it out and your cap should look like this :) , and the brim is ready to be attached soon.

DSCF1853

SO here is where it gets a little foggy b/c I did not take good pics again, and forgot to write it down and it’s been almost a year so…..plus I can’t get to the cap to take a look either, so we’ll wing it. I think I had bought twill tape to do around the inside but it was too short so I had to use some of the camo fabric and since it was a first time I was not worrying about it being perfect. **I did find another hat that the inside/brim/lining was done the same.

If you are going to have a snap on the top assemble those pieces now. I have seen them where the brim is glued to the cap, I suppose you would use permanent fabric glue. Snap your top and brim together and pin it flat make sure you get it centered and the brim edges come right to the edge of the cap. Sew the brim on abuot 1/4 in. Now your brim should have 2 sewn lines.

DSCF1855

*TRICKY PART*(If you are doing a lining place that inside as well and make sure you have all 3 layers while sewing) So now take your band piece and starting at the center back line it up to the edges and sew 1/4 in up to  brim.  WHEN getting to the brim area make sure you get the edges of the brim. Take your band piece and bring it down the brim and stitch over top that first close to edge stictching, making sure when you are coming back to the next edge that you get all layers (I missed and you can see it sticking out a little-it’s under the cap so not really noticable). Meet back at the center, where you can fold the band over at the end (if there is enought) making it clean.

DSCF1854

NOW turn everything into the cap and iron it down good. Sew around the edge about 1/8 in.  MAKE sure you get all that brim (lining if you did one) in there too!  In the pic you can see the inside of my cap with the band folded into it.

DSCF1857

The inside should look like this. And you notice my brim corner on the top where I missed it.

DSCF1869

Now let everyone try it on!

DSCF1862DSCF1863DSCF1866

And after all that my son wore it to school and he said his friends said it looked like an old man hat and he didn’t wear it to school again. Even though he really liked it. Peer pressure gesh!

If you are still giving out this pattern I would truly appreciate a copy. I have been searching the internet for one to no avail and can’t afford to pay 17.00 for a pattern on etsy.

Could you please email me the pattern? It is so adorable! I’ve searched and searched for one for so long. I would really appreciate it.! Thank you.

Could you please email the pattern? My DH LOVES these kinds of caps!

Hello! Looks like you did a great job! Would you mind emailing the pattern pieces? My son is going to be making a Hardy Boys costume.
Thank you!

Love your hat. May I have a copy of your pattern.

Arg! Hubby’s been looking for a pattern for this hat for a long time! Any chance I could get the pieces from you? I would be infinitely thankful!

Today was my lucky day!! Like you, I’ve looked for free ivy cap patterns before with no luck, tried finding a Simplicity pattern that had one (my fav brand to sew) and again no luck.
A few months ago I found a newsboy cap (through Simplicity) and have probably made a dozen of them. They’re cute! Would you please send me your pattern? I would LOVE to play with it in different fabrics!

Also, you asked for a suggestion or two…since I’ve made lots of hats before I thought of perhaps
#1: just sewing (by hand) a few stitches to attach the cap to the brim.
#2: for the body of the brim…I like to use double sided iron-on interfacing. The really thick kind, double that up and it makes a perfect brim and as a bonus it lets the cap be washable! :)
Thanks so much for your blog and sharing this great info with us!

I made a ‘practice’ cap today and LOVED it!! Thanks again SO much for the pattern pieces!
The back center seam puckered a bit once it was all finished so I just took a few of the stitches out (since there was about half an inch of back-stitching). Now I can find a way to make it a size or two larger and do it with the ‘real’ fabric.

I would greatly appreciate it if you would send me a copy of your pattern. Thanks for all the hard work you put into this and for your willingness to share it.

Cool cap. I would love to have the pattern of your driver’s cap as my first sewing project. best regards.

I like being crafty and i thought i would start this as my next project. I have a good idea about making one out of a vintage shirt with a good liner. If you could be so kind, please email me a copy of this pattern and I will send a pic of the complete hat.

Looks awesome! I’m just got a sewing machine and was hoping to make one of these as my first project. I’d love the pattern if you wouldn’t mind passing it along. Thanks!

Could I have the pattern? Trying to make one for my grandson. Thanks!

Hello. It took me forever just to find a shop to sell this cap style in my size (8), let alone anyone who’s actually made one on their own.
I’d like so much to have the pattern so i can try to make one for myself. The one I have now is leather which is way too hot for summer weather.

If I manage to make one without losing my sanity (only sewing machine I have is at least 20 years old), I’ll give this site out to my small sewing circle over here at Arkansas Tech University.

Thanks for the site.

i’d love your pattern! my boyfriend wants one so bad, thanks!

Okay, I’m requesting the pattern too, if it is still available. If you check out my site, I’d be happy to exchange pattern for roll of embroidered toilet paper. Just email you choice to me, just a thought. Thanks
Hugs and smiles Robin

Evenin’
I was wondering if you were indeed looking at these posts because it’s filled with requests for a pattern, myself being among them. I would be happy if you at least post about having to comment for a pattern, or posting the pattern on the entry or even stating that you won’t give it out. I do realise that 99 cents is a cheep price and that we can all go get one, but I for one can’t go walk to one and I don’t have a car.
if you would please respond

Thanks and have a good day.

Hi there..I just finished making a cap like this out of an old one I found at a flea market. I used scrap jeans..I wanted to see if I could do it, as my brother has been begging me to make them.
The hat I make came out fine..BUT.. I just dont know how accurate my math would be at size changing. I really want to make them for little heads.
I see from your coments you have an over-whelming amount of requests for your pattern.. add me to that list if you can.
Thanks so much..and if you have any other great ideas..please share them .. Debbie

Hi…This is great a patten at last. I have been making my own ( for me to wear) newsboy caps for years and have wanted to make an Ivy cap for personal use but have never been able to find a pattern as you say, only knitting pattens and I dont knit. I tryed to copy from a cap a friend had bought but as i was not alowed to cut it up, just draw around it it didnt work out very well. If its possible to have the pieces you so kindly worked out here i will be very greatful
Thanks
Peta

Hello,
I have been looking for hat patterns on the net and yours looks the best by far. Please could you tell me where I could find a pattern like this one. I live in in Durban, South Africa and craft items are limited here.
My grandson’s class have to dress like one of the Letterland carachters at the end of the school year (November) and he has been chosen to be Yellow Yo-yo man who wears a yellow cap so of course granny has to make him one.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Tank you so much, we would newer have this kind of cap if it wasn’t for you. We did it all by hand (me and my wife) from the old colored jeans. Please send us email, so that we can send you pictures of the cap it self.
Thanks so much and God Bless You!!

Hi! Could I please have a copy of the pattern?
My little guy loves these hats and suddenly all the stores around us stopped selling them! :(
So, I suppose the next best thing is to start making him some.
They only last a season before he outgrows them, so maybe this will help!

Hi, excellent tutorial. Is it possible that you could email me the pattern?

Many thanks.

If the pieces are still available, would you be able to e-mail them to me for a man’s medium size? Thank you so much!

Please send me the pattern. Thanks!

Hello, I was wondering if you could email me the pattern so that i can make one of those wonderful hats.

Hi, it looks like I’m waaaay late in requesting this hat pattern, but if it is at all possible, I would love to have your pattern, too! My husband only wears this type of hat and they are hard to find! The patterns are even harder!! Thanks in advance, Phyllis

Like all the others I have been searching for a driving cap pattern for several years. If you are still sharing please send it via email.
Thanks for your generosity.

I was just about to give up on this…I was even looking on Etsy for a PDF, and could not find a good one. If you still have the pattern available, I would love a copy.

Thanks!
Heather

Do you still have the pattern? I realize that this is quite a bit later than the rest of the posts, but I have been searching for one of these for a while.

ginkgo389@gmail.com

Please could you email me the pattern pieces for the flat cap?
Thanks
Jan

As many others I have been trying to find a patern for the driving cap. A patern like the one you used for your son would help me complete a project for a grandson before Halloween. Your kindness and willness to share is appreciated.
Thanks
Win

Your work is relly fine!. It is really impossible finding a pattern on the net. If you can, be so kind to send me your pattern (I want it for me).

How fabulous! I would love a copy of the pattern is you are still able to send one. Many thanks! LA :)

Howdy! First time running across, your site, but how pleased I am. As a guy, it’s really hard to find adaptable patterns to use for sewing. Oddly enough, there are so many men who design and/or sew.

Anyways, I wanted to thank you, first of all, for developing this unisex pattern. Utilitarian and sharp for men, cute and playful for women, and easy enough for even a novice to alter for different sizing (i have small head syndrome :) .

Of course, i would like to actually make the hat. Please to be sending pattern at earliest convenience. :)

It’s enterprising people like you who keep the craft world going. May your spirit of egalitarianism and charity continue in yourself and the others you inspire. Good health to you and yours.

Any chance you are still handing out the pattern? I’m a photographer and wanted to find a hat like this asap to use for a photoshoot — Making one seems like it’ll be easier than finding one!

Hello! Awesome job on the driving hat! I wear these things ALL the time and would love to be able to make my own. Could you email me the pattern? It would be most appreciated! If you need something for it just ask. Thanks very much,
David

I just found your blog and really want the pattern!
I’m making a winter dress coat for my grandson and want this capa to match.

I really hope you’re still giving away this pattern. My husband loves these hats, but loses them frequently. Making them would be so much easier than buying them. Thank you so much.

Hi, I have been wearing hats like this for the last 4 years. My grandmother tought me how to sew and I would love to make one of these hats. I just got some light blue seude and would love to use your pattern. If you dont mind could you please send it to me.

Got an email from my nephew late last night asking for a blaze orange cap like this in time for his hunting trip in a few days. I’m desperate, so can you email the pattern to me? Hello there,

I know you’ve probably heard this about a million times but I would really appreciate it if there was any way you could send me a copy of this hat pattern. My mom is a cancer survivor and she always wears a hat like this one and I wanted to make one for her for X-mas this year. It looks like it will be difficult but I always enjoyed a challenge and I am sure glad for any advice you could send my way as well.

Thank you much,
Autumn

HOW DO I GET A PATTERN FOR A DRIVING HAT

I would also love a copy of this pattern I’ve have been searching high and low for one and would just love to try yours out!!

My wife and I are taking a sewing class and they are not providing many Men’s patterns to sew. This looks fabulous. Could I ask you to send me the pattern too. Thank you!

Ben

I would certainly love to have this pattern. Having a very large head, it is nearly impossible to find caps/hats to fit commercially and I have yet to find a pattern. I like this style of cap and would think it fun to have a go at making it upon receiving the pattern.

I have one question as to the insert material for the bill, what exactly did you use and if bought, can you tell me of the availability (where, what it is called, etc.)?
Many thanks,
Mike

I have been searching for a pattern! I’d be most grateful for a copy of yours.
Thanks, Kathy

I would love your pattern for this hat. This is the only hat my dad wears and I would love to make him and my son matching hats.

I would like to request an emailed copy of the pattern pieces!! :)

Hi! This looks really great!!!
My 2 year old daughter is crazy about my husband’s cap, so I’ve been looking around for children’s caps but couldn’t find them.
So I decided to make one myself… Can you mail me bout the pattern please? (Sorry for my English, I’m from Belgium…)
Thanks a lot!
Katrien

I have been searching the web for hours today trying to find this pattern out of print Vogue and Burda. If you’re still sending out a copy of your pattern pieces, I would be forever indebted. Thank you so much. Mary Mohr

Wow that’s great! Thanks for instructions, any chance I could get the pattern off you?
Kim

Hey there! This is exactly what I have been looking for! My son loves these driving caps and I would love to make him a few out of wool remnants I have lying around. This turned out beautifully! Any time you can get around to it, I would love the pattern.
Thanks so much!
What a great website!
Donna

Could you email me a copy of the pattern? Thanks

I would love this pattern if you are still sharing. Wanting to make my son and husband matching caps. Try Timtek (sp?) for the brim. It is a super heavy weight lining I used for the bottom of purses as a stabilizer. Thanks for posting this pattern, a HUGE help for sewing for the boys!!

Hello! Great looking cap! I am interested in learning how to sew a cap like yours. The pictures and instructions are awesome. Thanks so much for posting them. Will you please e-mail me a copy of your pattern. Sincerely, Ethan

cbuns19@yahoo.com

At last, my son in law requested one of these hats to match golf pants I made him for a special golfing function on boxing day. I have been to endless lengths to find a pattern to no avail. Please email me the pattern and I will forever be in your debt. I await your reply.
Many thanks
Regards Jilly.

Hi , your job doing this flat cap is really good. For some months I was looking the internet for a pattern of this kind o caps using, like you say, all the names they have: sixpence, scally cap, irish cap, tweed cap, salmon hat, union cap, dai cap, jeff cap, windsor cap, touring cap, driving cap and newspaper cap and I did found nothing to work on it. I will appreciate if you send your pattern to me.
Thanks very muchs
Jose

Hi there, My 2010 Christmas gifts to my niece and Nephew-in-law were to be a beret for her and a golf cap for him. Your web site is the only one that looks like something useful. However, having a pattern would be a boon. I’m trying to construct the golf cap pattern myself but having little luck. Is it possible that you can send me the pattern? I would like to get the golf cap finished sometime early in the New Year. Thank you, Martha

Thank you for your time,

Aaron

My husband wears these hats all the time and now we have a 10 month old grandson and I would like to make one for him. I think I could alter the pattern to make it smaller if you could send me a pattern. I have looked everywhere for a pattern. You instructions are great! Infant size is too small for him so he will probably need a child size. Do you think it could be altered to fit him. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,
Love ur simple and easy to follow tutorial and would like to make one for my husband and my little son so they can look like a pair :) Hope you can send me the pattern, thank you.

Guess what? I too have looked for a pattern. I may be late: but I may be early for the next revival of flat hats. Yours is a classic.
I would love to have your pattern in any way you send it. I figure my wife will have no excuse to make me a denim flat hat. Need I send a fee for procrastination? Thank you for your sharing your gifts and talent.

Hi!! I’m in the same boat you were. Thinking, “I’ll just find a pattern really quickly online and be done with this by morning!”

Internet, don’t fail me now!! If you still have this pattern, will you please email it to me? Also, if you could tell me the circumference of your son’s head at the time, that’d be helpful. That sounds odd. What I mean is- I’m wanting to make this for a toddler. Did you make it for a teen?

Hello,

Could I get this pattern from you? You would think there would be patterns everywhere for this style of cap… but…. I have been searching for a while and there isn’t.
Thank you.
Julie

Hi, Great How-to! I have the same story…searching the internet for a pattern. Could you email me the pattern pieces??
Thanks!

Terrific hat; I admire your creativity and versatility. I see a lot of people requesting the pattern; if you send them out, I’d like one, too.

Most of all, I’d like to urge you to keep the hat. Hopefully your son will be able to ignore the peer pressure and enjoy it before his head grows too big for the one you made.

My husband has recently become very excited about making a costume for a steampunk convention and I really want to encourage his creativity! If you are still e-mailing the pattern, it would be greatly appreciated if you could e-mail it to me, too. :D
Thank you so much for posting this pattern on the internet – YOU ARE AWESOME!

I have a couple of old Harris Tweed jackets and would love to recycle them into hats for me and my sons.

thanks in advance,

Geoff

Hailey

Could you send me the pattern please? My son in law requested one for Christmas. Thanks!

Is there any way to get a copy of this pattern still. I love it! Thanks

My husband fell in love with one of these hats when my nephew from Germany was visiting recently. I thought I might make matching hats for him and his grandsons. I found a boy’s pattern – it is called Huch Finn and is done by Sew Liberated. However, I am very hesitant to try to enlarge that for an adult. Would really appreciate a copy of your efforts, am even willing to pay for it.

Oh, yes, I understand the “won’t wear it because someone made a negative comment.” How many of our efforts have been shot down by that situation.

hi there, my husband wants me to make a hat like this for him, is the pattern good for grown up chap’s? If so could you email it me?
